Claude Fitzpatrick (Pat) Hughes Jr, 93, of Hilton Head, SC passed away on Tuesday, September 4, 2018.

A native of Roanoke, VA he was the son of the late Claude Fitzpatrick Hughes Sr and Lillian Katherine Garst Hughes. He was the spouse to Jean Hutchins Hughes of Hilton Head, SC. Pat joined the Navy after high school graduation.  As part of his Naval duties, he attended Emory And Henry, Columbia, Northwestern, & Harvard Universities.  When WWII ended, he enrolled at Roanoke College where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry.  He then attended the Institute of Textile Technology & earned a Master’s Degree in Textile Chemistry. He worked at Drayton Mills as a Technical Supervisor and later at Millikan Mills as a Technical Director.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons: Alan Lee Hughes (Tonya) of Abbeville, SC, Steven Patrick Hughes (Felicity) of Greenwood, SC; step sons: Wilton Darnell Newton (Meesha Dumas) of Atlanta, GA, Daniel Alan Newton (Kim) of Seneca, SC; Grandchild: Kristen Mariel Hughes, step-grandchildren: Cory (Jean), Matthew, Spencer, Corbin, Gabe, Seth, Anna, Sarah Kate, and Ella Newton; and sister: Martha Wimmer (Neil) of Burlington, NC.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother: Dr. Russell Lee Hughes; Sister: Jean Martin & husband, Gil Martin of Palm Coast, Fl & Roanoke, VA.

The memorial service will be held on Friday, September 7, 2018 at 4:00 pm at Sea Island Chapel, 173 Marshland Rd., Hilton Head Island, SC 29926. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 3pm-4pm at the church. Burial will be held at Sherwood Memorial Park, Salem, VA on September 10, 2018 at 2:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sea Island Chapel, or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
