Fred Herman Carlton, 86, of Anderson, SC, loving and devoted husband of Judi C. Carlton, passed away peacefully at the Rainey Hospice House on Monday, May 4, 2015 after a period of declining health.

Born in Anderson, SC on April 19, 1929, Herman was the son of the late Fletcher and Iola Sanders Carlton.  Herman retired from the City of Anderson Fire Department as Assistant Chief in 1993.  He was a member of Post 14 of the American Legion and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.  He loved and honored his God and enjoyed the Christian fellowship he found in The Men’s Bible Class at Trinity.

Herman proudly served his country as a United States Marine and was a veteran of the Korean War.  He enjoyed maintaining contact with fellow Marines who served with him in Korea.

In addition to his wife, Herman is survived by a daughter, Lisa Janelle Chambers, a son, John Chambers and his wife Karen and his two beautiful grandchildren of whom he was most proud, Ashleigh Elizabeth Chambers and Steven John Chambers.  He is also survived by a sister, Minnie Carlton Jones, a very special sister-in-law, Sara C. Moore and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Herman was predeceased by a daughter, Dianne Carlton Ware, and a son, Steven George Carlton.   He was also preceded in death by brothers, BC, Clarence, Reed, Milton, Raymond, Jack, Tom, Samuel, Robert and Bill, and sisters Mattie, Ruth, and Mae.

No mention of Herman would be complete without his adorable little MaltiPoo, Abbi.  Herman and Judi adopted Abbi in 2010 and she quickly became his constant companion.  He opened his heart to this precious bundle of love and was rewarded with all the love she had to give. She will miss her Daddy.

Herman’s life and legacy will be celebrated at Trinity United Methodist Church on Saturday, May 9, at 11:00 am.  The Rev. Mary V. Teasley and Dr. L. Thomas Ritchie will officiate.  The family will receive friends at a reception immediately following the service in the Fellowship Hall.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Hospice of the Upstate or the Endowment Fund of Trinity United Methodist Church.

Fred Herman Carlton touched many lives during his time on earth.  He was a man of many endearing qualities and he embraced life with all its joys and challenges to the fullest.  His family would like to gratefully thank the entire staff of Hospice of the Upstate for their exceptional care and concern during his last days.   You will remain in our hearts forever as each one of you went the extra mile to see that Herman and our family lacked for nothing during his time with you.
