May 31, 2026 at 2:12 pmI knew Robert at Augustana College (1959-61) and at Univ. of Illinois (Urbana, IL, 1962-63). He was an extraordinary musician who did not read music yet could follow and play note for note on his tenor sax the complicated jazz improvisations of a Charlie Parker or Sonny Rollins. He also had a deep feeling while playing piano. I’ve never known a more talented “natural” musician. His “hero” was multi-saxophonist Sonny Stitt, whom he introduced me to. I’ve never met a more amazing self-taught talent. To this day, I’m surprised he didn’t become a professional musician, though I suspect he had analytic skills that extended beyond music.
