Joyce Martin “JM” Slaton, 92, of Pendleton, SC, passed away on Saturday, May 20, 2017.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Lois Simpson Slaton; four children: Jerry (Sue) Slaton of Anderson, Peggy (Al) Waits of Powdersville, Gwen (Tom) Fleitstra of Pendleton, Lynn (Peter) Dunster of Anderson; one brother, Albert Forris Slaton; seven grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.
Services will be held on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at Sosebee Mortuary, South Chapel at 2pm. Visitation will be held prior to the service beginning at 1pm. Burial will be private.
Mr. Slaton was born May 4, 1925, in Townville to the late Charley L. and Willie Alice Slaton. He grew up in the Townville area. He was the retired owner of Pendleton Lumber Company, where he also repaired and sold antiques for over 40 years.
Additionally, as a Marine in WWII, he fought in the battle of Iwo Jima, where he witnessed the raising of the American flag. He coached Little League sports to countless Pendleton youth. He was a member of Oakdale Baptist Church, a Mason, an avid bowler and golfer, who many times shot his age, and a Clemson fanatic.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
