William Mimms ” Billy” Campbell, 75, of Pelzer, husband of Sandra Thrasher Campbell, passed away September 12, 2016.

Billy was a member of Cedar Shoals Baptist Church, retired Chief of South Greenville Fire District and was currently serving as Chairman of the Commission Board for the District.  He served as President of the Greenville County Fire Chiefs’ Association. The training facility at South Greenville Fire District Headquarters is named in his honor.  South Greenville’s Station 7 was dedicated to him in 2012. Billy served on the Board of Directors of Greenville County Farm Bureau.

After graduation in 1959 from Ellen Woodside High School, he joined the US Navy.  As a Seabee, he served two tours in Vietnam.  Although his health was adversely affected by his services, he always said he would fight for his country again. The greatest testament to his life was the impact he had on so many lives.  He loved God, his family, community and country.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter: Julia Altman (Dave); grandsons: Campbell and Christian Altman and Sean Mills; granddaughter: Madelaine Altman; great-grandson: Dietz Mills; brother: Sam Campbell (Ann); and his lab: Maggie.

Billy was predeceased by his parents: George and Lucy Mimms Campbell.

A Celebration of Life will be Friday, September 16, 11am at Beech Springs Church, 125 Cooley Bridge Rd, Pelzer, SC burial will follow at Greenville Memorial Gardens.  Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 15, 2016 at South Greenville Fire District Headquarters from 5-8pm.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to an education fund for his grandsons at Commercial Bank 8016 Augusta Rd, Piedmont, SC 29673 or Cedar Shoals Baptist Church, 1045 Cooley Bridge Road, Belton, SC 29627.
